Adolf “Dado” Topić was born on September 4, 1949, in Siverić near Drniš, Croatia, and raised in Nova Gradiška. Known professionally as Dado, he became one of the most influential figures in Croatian and former Yugoslav rock music. He began performing in early bands like “Đavolji eliksiri” and “Dinamiti,” before joining the progressive rock band Korni Grupa in 1969. In 1971, he founded the legendary Zagreb ensemble Time, with which he recorded three prog-rock albums and became the band’s defining voice.
Time achieved major success in the early 1970s, pioneering a jazz-rock fusion sound in the region. After the band's disbandment in 1977, Dado launched a successful solo career that continues to this day. He released multiple solo albums in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, producing classic songs such as “Princeza,” “Da li znaš da te volim,” and “Život u čizmama s visokom petom.”
In 2007, Topić represented Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest as part of the band Dragonfly with the song “Vjerujem u ljubav.” Though they did not advance past the semifinals, the performance marked a notable intersection of rock sensibilities and Eurovision pop culture. He also participated multiple times at Etnofest Neum with tracks like “Na te mislim” and “Nema prodaje.”
Known for his candidness and artistic integrity, Topić holds a critical stance toward digitalization and the commercial music industry. Even in his seventies, he remains creatively active, recently collaborating on the rock ballad “Tragovi sudbine” with the band Rockeri. As a steadfast representative of the analog generation, Dado Topić continues to embody authentic rock spirit with humanity and passion.
