A legendary 20th century artist, Mark Rothko assigned himself the task of creating a representation of the human tragedy through the most abstract painting there is. His stated goal: cure the world’s ills. His tools: a colored paste that he made himself, in secret, covering larger and larger canvases and creating spaces that could absorb the spectator. Declaring that he was not an Abstractionist, but a Materialist, Rothko has always eluded definition. This documentary reveals his unconventional path, one of the most surprising ones in modern art.

He is also a complex character, powerful for his artistic and intellectual side, a hypnotic, polyhedral man with many contradictions. A personality that, over the course of time, has become impenetrable. The documentary Miralles aims to portray the man and this complexity. A story built by variations-episodes, which through its architectures can compose an open and deep picture of his person and his creative process. The story begins the day of his disappearance.

His unique private mythology is shaped by both archaic, occult motifs and futuristic visions—manifesting in his buildings, film and theatre sets, furniture objects, and fine art works. They also sparked a revolution in architecture, challenging the rigid modernism of the era with their embrace of complexity, symbolism, and the lessons of the everyday landscape. Filmed with astonishing intimacy by their son, Stardust invites you to see the world through their eyes. It's a road-movie journey to the places that meant the most to them—including Rome, Venice, Paris, London, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas. Along the way, you'll witness their witty, subversive shorthand, quiet battles against a male-dominated establishment (including the infamous Pritzker Prize snub), and the enduring partnership that redefined architectural collaboration. Stardust is a funny, moving, and deeply human portrait—a film to fall in love with.
