Beth Gibbons is an English singer and songwriter born in Exeter, Devon, on 4 January 1965. Best known as the singer and lyricist of Portishead, her work encompasses trip-hop, alternative rock and alternative folk. She grew up on a farm with three sisters. At twenty-two, she moved to Bath before relocating to Bristol to pursue a singing career.
In Bristol, she met Geoff Barrow in 1991, beginning the partnership that would lead to Portishead. Together with Adrian Utley, they released the band’s debut album, “Dummy”, in 1994. Further studio releases followed with “Portishead” in 1997 and “Third” in 2008, alongside the 1998 live album “Roseland NYC Live”. While continuing her work with the group, Gibbons also pursued collaborations and projects outside the band.
One of these partnerships brought her together with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb, who records as Rustin Man. Their album, “Out of Season”, was released in the United Kingdom in October 2002 and reached number 28 on the UK albums chart. Its American release followed a year later.
In 2014, Gibbons performed Henryk Górecki’s Third Symphony with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki. She sang in Polish, and the recording was released in 2019. Also in 2014, she contributed vocals to British metal band Gonga’s version of “Black Sabbath”.
Her later collaborations include an appearance on “Mother I Sober” from Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”. Her contribution earned her a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year as a featured artist and songwriter.
Gibbons released her debut solo album, “Lives Outgrown”, on 17 May 2024. Introduced by the singles “Floating on a Moment” and “Reaching Out”, the album received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
Her musical inspirations include Édith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Otis Redding, Jimmy Cliff and Bono, particularly his performance on U2’s “The Joshua Tree”. She has also performed songs by Janis Joplin and expressed an appreciation for the music of Janis Ian.
