Beirut is an American indie folk project founded in 2006 by Zach Condon in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Condon remains the group’s only permanent member and primary composer, joined by various musicians during studio recordings and live performances. The name Beirut was chosen for its symbolic cultural complexity and serves as a reflection of the band’s eclectic, globally inspired sound.
The debut album Gulag Orkestar (2006) introduced a fusion of Balkan and Eastern European folk with indie aesthetics, earning Beirut early acclaim. This was followed by The Flying Club Cup (2007), influenced by French music, and The Rip Tide (2011), which offered a more personal and melodic approach. Later albums such as No No No (2015) and Gallipoli (2019) delved into experimental and electronic textures.
Between 2022 and 2025, Condon released Hadsel and A Study of Losses. The first was recorded during a retreat in Norway and features introspective, minimalist compositions. The second, a conceptual album, explores themes of loss and emotional recovery through acoustic and ambient arrangements.
Beirut is known for its use of unusual instruments, melancholic tones, and an inventive blend of musical traditions. Their live performances often feature lush brass and string sections, while Condon’s understated stage presence adds to the band’s emotional resonance and artistic authenticity.
