Križanke is one of Ljubljana’s most renowned cultural and architectural venues, located within a former 13th-century monastery of the Teutonic Order. In the 1950s, the complex was redesigned by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, who transformed it into a distinctive open-air theatre and festival venue. Today, Križanke serves as a major cultural center, especially during the Ljubljana Festival, hosting concerts, theatre performances, dance productions, and various artistic events. The complex features the Summer Theatre, the Knights’ Hall, the Križevniška Church, and several courtyards distinguished by a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural elements. Plečnik’s intervention gave the site a unique atmosphere by combining historical heritage with the functionality of a contemporary cultural venue. Križanke remains one of Ljubljana’s key cultural landmarks and an important example of adaptive reuse and preservation of historic architecture.
