Wiener Rathaus is one of Vienna’s most iconic buildings and serves as the seat of the city and provincial government of Vienna. Constructed between 1872 and 1883, it was designed by architect Friedrich von Schmidt as part of the development of Vienna’s Ringstraße boulevard. The building was created in the Neo-Gothic style, inspired by Flemish Gothic town halls, and is especially recognizable for its nearly 100-meter-high central tower topped by the famous Rathausmann statue. The complex contains more than 1,500 rooms, numerous arcaded courtyards, and representative halls, including the grand Festsaal. In front of the building lies Rathausplatz, one of Vienna’s main public event spaces, known for its Christmas market, film festival, and seasonal celebrations. Today, Wiener Rathaus remains an important political, cultural, and architectural landmark of the city and one of Austria’s most significant examples of historicist architecture.
