Biography - The Cure
The Cure is a British rock band formed in 1976 in Crawley, West Sussex. Robert Smith is the founding member and the consistent presence of the band, shaping its distinctive sound with his voice, guitar, and songwriting. The band initially went by the names Malice and Easy Cure before adopting the final name, The Cure, in 1978.
Their debut album Three Imaginary Boys (1979) brought recognition on the post-punk and new wave scene, with singles like “Boys Don’t Cry” becoming hits. During the 1980s, the band developed a signature dark sound with minimalist guitars and atmospheric bass, particularly on albums Seventeen Seconds and Pornography. Their commercial peak came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Disintegration considered one of their most important releases, featuring tracks like “Lovesong” and “Pictures of You.” The album Wish further cemented their success in the UK and US.
The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, but Robert Smith remains the core of The Cure. Their music and visual identity, including Smith’s distinctive appearance, have shaped the gothic rock and alternative music aesthetic. After a long hiatus, the band released Songs of a Lost World, reaffirming their enduring creativity and influence in music.
