Pixies

Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in 1986. The original lineup consisted of Black Francis (vocals and rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass and backing vocals), and David Lovering (drums). The name was found in a dictionary, chosen for its quirky and imaginative sound. Their debut EP Come on Pilgrim (1987) introduced a distinctive mix of punk energy, surf rock, and melodic yet often surreal lyrics. The first full-length album Surfer Rosa (1988) became a landmark in alternative rock, while Doolittle (1989) solidified their status as one of the most influential bands of the late 1980s. Albums Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991) expanded their sonic palette, but internal tensions led to their breakup in 1993. Pixies reunited in 2004 and released Indie Cindy in 2014, their first album in over two decades. It was followed by Head Carrier (2016), Beneath the Eyrie (2019), Doggerel (2022), and The Night the Zombies Came (2024). Although the lineup has changed over time, the band has retained its signature “loud-quiet-loud” dynamics, inspiring artists such as Nirvana, Radiohead, and Weezer. While never achieving massive commercial success, Pixies have remained a cult favorite whose influence on modern rock music endures.
