Luka Šulić is a Croatian-Slovenian cellist born in Maribor in 1987. He began cello lessons at the age of five and entered the Zagreb Academy of Music at fifteen, graduating at eighteen. He further honed his skills at institutions in Vienna before completing a master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2011.
A decorated musician, Šulić won major international awards, including both first and special prizes at the Lutosławski International Cello Competition in Warsaw (2009) and the European Broadcasting Union’s “New Talent” prize (2006), affirming his exceptional artistry.
He rose to fame in 2011 as half of the duo 2CELLOS, alongside Stjepan Hauser. Their cello cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” went viral on YouTube, earning them a contract with Sony Masterworks and an invitation to tour with Elton John.
After 2CELLOS concluded its farewell tour in 2022, Luka focused on solo projects. His 2019 album Vivaldi: The Four Seasons topped classical charts, and his 2024 album Life showcases original compositions that blend classical tradition with emotional storytelling on the cello. He tours globally as a soloist, performing in prestigious venues across Europe, South America, and Japan with leading orchestras. He resides near Maribor with his wife and three children.
