Kathy Kelly (born Kathleen Anne Kelly on March 6, 1963, in Leominster, Massachusetts) is an American singer, songwriter, and producer, best known as a member of the family band The Kelly Family, which achieved major success across Europe in the 1990s.
Raised in a musical family, she was homeschooled along with her siblings and developed her musical abilities at an early age. She learned to play multiple instruments, including the violin, guitar, keyboards, and accordion, and later became a teacher to her younger siblings.
Her career began in the 1970s when she performed with her siblings as part of The Kelly Kids, which later evolved into The Kelly Family. Initially performing on the streets and at small venues, the group gradually gained recognition, with Kathy playing a central role as an arranger and songwriter. She was also one of the main producers of the group’s recordings from the 1980s through the late 1990s.
The band achieved major commercial success in 1994 with the album Over the Hump, which sold millions of copies and established them as one of Europe’s leading pop acts.
In 2000, Kathy Kelly left the band to focus on her solo career. She had already released The Best of Kathy Kelly in 1999, featuring both her work with the group and new material. She went on to release several albums, including Morning of My Life (2000), Straight from My Heart (2002), and Godspel (2005), often interpreting traditional songs from around the world.
She later rejoined the band for tours and participated in their 2017 reunion.
Today, Kathy Kelly is regarded as a key figure in The Kelly Family’s history, recognized for shaping the group’s sound and maintaining a successful solo career.
