Ice Nine Kills are an American metalcore band from Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 2000 under the name Ice Nine. The group was founded by high school friends Spencer Charnas and Jeremy Schwartz, adopting the name Ice Nine Kills shortly before the release of their debut album. Today, Charnas remains the only original member and the creative force behind the band's evolving artistic vision. Over the years, Ice Nine Kills have established themselves as one of the most distinctive acts in contemporary heavy music through their unique blend of aggressive sound and horror-inspired storytelling.
The band's earliest material incorporated influences from ska punk, pop punk, and alternative rock. As their career progressed, however, they shifted toward a heavier sound rooted in metalcore and post-hardcore while incorporating symphonic elements and theatrical presentation. Ice Nine Kills have frequently described their style as "theatricore," reflecting their emphasis on cinematic concepts, elaborate performances, and immersive visual storytelling.
Their debut studio album, Last Chance to Make Amends, was released in 2006 and was followed by the EP The Burning and extensive touring across the United States. The band shared stages with artists such as As I Lay Dying, A Day to Remember, Paramore, and Thursday, gradually building a dedicated fan base within the alternative music community. The release of Safe Is Just a Shadow in 2010 marked a significant turning point, helping define the heavier and more dramatic style that would become their signature.
Ice Nine Kills achieved broader recognition with Every Trick in the Book, an album inspired by classic literary works, before reaching new heights with The Silver Scream in 2018. The record featured songs based on iconic horror films and became the band's most commercially successful release at the time. Its sequel, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood, released in 2021, expanded the horror narrative even further and achieved an even stronger chart performance.
Renowned for their elaborate stage productions featuring costumes, theatrical effects, and references to beloved horror franchises, Ice Nine Kills have become one of the most innovative bands in modern metal. By combining crushing riffs, memorable melodies, dark humor, and cinematic storytelling, they have cultivated a passionate global following and secured their place among the defining heavy acts of their generation.
