Dead Poet Society is an American rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2013. The current lineup consists of Jack Underkofler on vocals and guitar, Jack Collins on guitar, Dylan Brenner on bass, and Will Goodroad on drums. Over the years, the band has emerged as one of the most exciting acts in contemporary alternative rock, developing a sound that combines powerful guitar riffs, memorable melodies, and a modern production style. Their music blends elements of alternative rock, indie rock, blues rock, and garage rock while maintaining a distinctive experimental edge.
The group was formed while its members were studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The original lineup included Underkofler, Collins, Nick Taylor, and Goodroad. Remarkably, they performed their first concert only two days after forming, forcing them to choose a band name quickly. Although their name inevitably recalls the well-known film Dead Poets Society, the members have stated that it was not intended as a direct reference to the movie. After graduating, they relocated to Los Angeles to pursue their musical ambitions full time.
During their early years, Dead Poet Society operated independently, writing, recording, and producing their own material. They released a series of EPs, including Haviland, Weapons, Axiom, and Dempsey, gradually building a dedicated following and refining their artistic identity. A significant breakthrough came through repeated tours in Mexico, where they developed a passionate fan base. In 2019, Dylan Brenner replaced founding bassist Nick Taylor, and shortly afterward the band signed with Spinefarm Records.
Their debut full-length album, -!-, released in 2021, introduced the band to a wider international audience. Singles such as ".CoDA." and ".intoodeep." gained traction on rock radio and charts, highlighting the group's trademark contrast between heavy, down-tuned guitar work and melodic, pop-influenced choruses. In 2024, Dead Poet Society released their second studio album, Fission, further strengthening their reputation as one of the most promising acts in modern rock.
Known for energetic live performances and emotionally honest songwriting, Dead Poet Society continues to push the boundaries of contemporary rock music. Their ability to balance aggression with melody has established them as one of the defining emerging bands of their generation.
