The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra is an ensemble with over 150 years of tradition of excellence in performance in Zagreb and Croatia. Founded in 1871 and operating under its current name since 1920, it is considered a cultural landmark of the city and a prominent ambassador of Croatian music globally. Over its history, the orchestra has been shaped by numerous distinguished chief conductors and partnerships with both domestic and international artists of high calibre.
The orchestra is known for a broad and diverse repertoire – from large symphonic works, operas, and chamber music to projects that bring classical music closer to younger and non-traditional audiences. It regularly programs concert series (such as the Red, Blue, and Off cycles), special performances for children (Minimini), chamber concerts, as well as charity and film-music collaborations.
In recent decades, under various artistic leaders including its latest chief conductor, the Zagreb Philharmonic has continued to grow through ambitious performances, recordings, and appearances all over Europe, Asia, and North America. It stands out for premiering works by contemporary composers and for fostering young talent through its initiatives.
The orchestra does not limit itself to concert halls; it often carries music into public spaces – parks, squares – through free concerts, educational programs, and socially engaged performances. In doing so, Zagreb Philharmonic seeks to be a cultural voice that resonates through daily urban life, making classical music accessible to all.
