Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band formed in 1987 in Upplands Väsby. Initially named Blitzkrieg, then Megatherion, they soon settled on Therion — a name inspired by Celtic Frost’s album To Mega Therion, meaning “the great beast” and evoking occult and esoteric themes.
Founded and led by Christofer Johnsson, Therion evolved from death metal roots into a pioneering force in symphonic metal, blending orchestras, choirs, and classical arrangements with heavy guitar riffs. Their lyrics often explore mythology, occultism, magic, and ancient traditions, creating a deeply atmospheric and mystical sound.
Albums like Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas set the stage for experimentation, while Theli became a turning point with lush orchestration and layered choral work. Vovin (1998) remains their best-selling album, followed by ambitious conceptual works such as Secret of the Runes, the double album Lemuria/Sirius B, and Gothic Kabbalah.
In recent years, the Leviathan trilogy (2021–2023) has been highlighted by Johnsson as one of the band’s most creative and adventurous phases. The current lineup features Christofer Johnsson, vocalists Thomas Vikström and Lori Lewis, guitarist Christian Vidal, bassist Nalle "Grizzly" Påhlsson, and drummer Sami Karppinen, often joined by guest musicians and choirs.
Throughout their career, Therion have maintained a reputation for pushing the boundaries of metal, seamlessly fusing orchestral grandeur, mystical storytelling, and fearless innovation.
