- After successful artistic collaboration with the National Ballet Company from Lisbon, the Zagreb National Theatre and the Stuttgart State Ballet, choreographer Edward Clug decided to pursue the creative research of a new area of dance expression, which he rounded off with a contemplation on the music of Chopin and his contemporaries. In seeking various points of contact of expressivity of movement, the minimal aesthetics of the dance scenery and the reduced (but no less intense) poetics of contemporary choreographic approaches - both characteristic traits of postmodern theatre - match the narrative potential of romantic piano music, which without Chopin’s compositional contribution would undoubtedly lack its great artistic wealth. Clug’s purpose is, therefore, to fully exploit the basic principle of movement, i.e., the principle of departure and return, with which he spontaneously seeks a direct link with the soft and fluid atmospheric quality of Chopin’s pianism. The original project Watching Others alluringly addresses the audience with its multilayered structure in which, in addition to the principle of rounded return, the constantly changing psychological state of observation and the process of observing others also play an important role, leading to the final dynamic dance image, which recalls the unbroken flow of musical polyphony, as well as to a different experience of time, both of which again new dimensions in interaction with the dance environment.
