  • The Queen of Spades is a charming operatic work precisely because of the sensitive juxtaposition of emotional contrasts – the opposition between romantic longing, occasionally with the childlike naivety of unrestrained lyricism, pastoral sections, references to past styles and folklore, as well as dark dramatic shades, often expressed with Wagnerian gestures.
